Castro do Zambujal is the strongest archaeological stop around Torres Vedras. The fortified settlement dates to the third millennium BC, when this part of western Iberia was changing fast through metalworking, trade, and more complex village life.
The remains need a little imagination, but the place is worth the detour if prehistoric sites interest you. Visit the town museum as well for the fuller story.
