The Fort of Sao Vicente is the best place in town to understand the Lines of Torres Vedras. Its earthworks sit on the hill north of the centre, with the old chapel now used as a small visitor centre.
The fort's appeal is less about masonry than strategy. From the ridge you can read the roads, hills, and sightlines that helped make the French advance on Lisbon so difficult.
