Scheii Brasovului

The old Romanian quarter outside the Saxon walls

Schei is the Romanian quarter — the area where Romanian-speakers were permitted to settle when the walled Saxon town inside was reserved for German and Hungarian citizens. It sits just south of Catherine's Gate, running up a valley between two ridges, with the white tower of the St Nicholas Church (1495) at its centre.

The streets here are narrower and quieter than in the old town, with single-storey houses painted in faded yellow and ochre. The First Romanian School museum, beside St Nicholas, holds the country's earliest Romanian-language printed books and is worth half an hour. The annual Junii Brasovului festival, held on the first Sunday after Orthodox Easter, sees groups of riders in costume process through the streets in one of the older and odder folk traditions in Transylvania.
