Băneasa Forest is a 1,200-hectare woodland on the northern edge of Bucharest, running along the road toward Otopeni. It is technically within Bucharest's city limits but feels genuinely pastoral — oak and hornbeam trees, walking and cycling paths, and a quiet that is hard to find this close to a major European capital.
The forest has a small zoo (Zoo Băneasa) and an equestrian centre, but most people come simply to walk and run under the trees. In spring and autumn the colours are particularly good. On summer weekends, Romanian families bring barbecue grills and set up in the clearings — a deeply local way to spend an afternoon that visitors are welcome to observe or join. It is easily reached from Otopeni or from the northern Bucharest metro stations in about 15 minutes by taxi.
