Snagov Lake and Monastery

Snagov Monastery sits on a small island in Snagov Lake, about 10 kilometres north of Otopeni, and is reputedly the burial place of Vlad Țepeș — Vlad the Impaler, the fifteenth-century Wallachian prince whose brutal methods of execution inspired Bram Stoker's Count Dracula. A tomb slab near the altar is pointed out as his, though Romanian historians have long debated whether his remains are actually here or were moved at some point. The association is enough to make it one of the more atmospherically charged day trips in the region.

The monastery itself dates to the fourteenth century and has been rebuilt several times. The current church contains frescoes in the Wallachian style, and a small ferry takes visitors across from the lakeshore. The lake is a popular spot for locals — there are rowing boats for hire, fish restaurants along the waterfront, and in summer the grassy banks fill with Bucharest families. Combine it with a drive through the flat Ilfov countryside, which has its own unhurried appeal.

From Otopeni or the airport, the simplest approach is a taxi or Bolt ride (around 20–25 minutes). There is no direct public transport connection.
