A Romanian Orthodox monastery in the lower city, housing the relics of Saint John the New — a Christian martyr from the early 15th century who was killed in Cetatea Albă (now in Ukraine) for refusing to convert to Islam. The monastery was built by Stefan cel Mare in 1514. The relics are displayed in a silver casket and are the object of local pilgrimage, particularly around the feast day in June. The church interior has good frescoes in the Byzantine style typical of Moldavian religious art.
