Resurrection Monastery

The 14th-century monastic settlement that grew into the city of Cherepovets

The Resurrection Monastery is the origin point of Cherepovets. It was founded in the late 14th century by two monks, Feodosy and Afanasy, both disciples of Sergius of Radonezh — the great monastic reformer whose Trinity Monastery outside Moscow remains the spiritual heart of Russian Orthodoxy. Their small settlement on the hill above the Sheksna River slowly attracted a community around it, and that community became the city. Without the monastery, there would be no Cherepovets.

The buildings standing today are mostly reconstructions from the 19th century — the cathedral dates from 1869, rebuilt in a solid Neo-Byzantine style after earlier structures were lost. The grounds are open to visitors, and the cathedral interior retains its period decoration. It is a quiet place, set back slightly from the commercial centre, and easy to visit on foot from the embankment.
