The Vitus Bering Monument honours the Danish-born explorer in Russian service whose expedition founded Petropavlovsk in the 18th century. It is one of the oldest monuments in the Russian Far East.
The monument is not grand, but it is a useful marker for the city's origin story: a Pacific outpost built for exploration, naval logistics and survival at the edge of the Russian map.
