St. Nicholas Monastery

The St. Nicholas Monastery sits just north of the fortress, a short walk along the riverbank. Founded in the 12th century, it is an active religious community today, which gives it a different atmosphere to the fortress — quieter, with the rhythms of monastic life still present. The Cathedral of St. Nicholas at its centre dates from the 16th century and has been carefully maintained. Visitors are welcome to enter the grounds outside of services. Dress modestly; women should cover their heads inside the cathedral.
