The Sakhalin Regional Museum is the city's essential stop. Its Japanese-style building was completed in 1937, when Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was Toyohara, and the collections cover the island's nature, Indigenous peoples, Japanese period, penal history, and Soviet development.
Do not rush the grounds. The outdoor displays, stone markers, and old cannons help make sense of an island that has repeatedly changed hands and borders.
