Princely Serbian Theatre

Serbia's oldest theatre, founded by Prince Miloš in 1835.

The Princely Serbian Theatre sits opposite the old princely court and has been performing in some form since 1835, when Prince Miloš established it as part of his effort to give the new Serbian capital the institutions of a modern European state. The current building is grandly proportioned for the size of the town and gives Kragujevac its small bit of Vienna.

For visitors, the easiest way in is during the Joakimfest international theatre festival in October — performances are in several languages with surtitles. Outside the festival, occasional guided tours of the auditorium and behind-the-scenes spaces can be arranged at the box office.

A story
Knjaževsko-srpski teatar was founded in 1835, making it the oldest theatre in central Serbia and one of the oldest in the Balkans. The current building, an eclectic late-19th-century structure, hosts the annual Joakimfest in the second week of October — an international theatre festival that has run for over forty years.
