Stari Grad

Stari Grad — literally "Old Town" — is the historic centre of Novi Sad and where almost every visitor will spend most of their time. The neighbourhood runs from the Danube up to Liberty Square and is laid out on a tight Habsburg grid of low yellow and ochre houses, churches of half a dozen denominations, and the kind of cafes where you can sit for two hours over a single coffee.

The northern edge slides into Almaški Kraj, a quieter Serbian-Orthodox neighbourhood of older single-storey houses around the Almaška Church. South of Liberty Square the streets become wider and more 20th-century. Stari Grad is best walked rather than mapped — turn off the main streets and you will find a courtyard, a galleria, or another small church every couple of blocks.
