Špania Dolina is a small mountain village north of Banská Bystrica, but its steep lanes and timbered miners' houses carry a much larger story. Copper from these hills helped make central Slovakia rich, and the old shafts, slag heaps, and miners' church still give the place a strong sense of its working past.
It works best as a half-day escape from the city: climb through the village slowly, look for the covered staircase up to the church, and use the trails around the former mining landscape if the weather is clear. The reward is not a single monument so much as the feeling of a preserved mining settlement folded into forested hills.
