Urpín is a forested hill rising 440 metres above sea level on the southern edge of the city, about 2 km from the main square. It offers the easiest green escape from Banská Bystrica, with walking paths through mixed forest leading to a viewpoint at the top with panoramas over the city and the surrounding mountain ranges — the Low Tatras to the south, the Veľká Fatra to the north.
The hill has a small amphitheatre used for summer concerts and a recreational area popular with local families. The walk up from the city centre takes about 30 to 40 minutes on well-marked paths.
