Zaramaga

The working-class neighbourhood north of the centre grew up in the 1950s and 60s to house the thousands of workers who came to Vitoria as the city's industry — automotive parts, aerospace, machine tools — boomed. It is the site of the events of 3 March 1976, when five workers were shot dead by police during a general strike against the late Franco regime, a day now commemorated as a public holiday in the Basque Country.

The neighbourhood is residential and unfussy, but worth visiting for the memorial in front of the church of San Francisco de Asís and for a glimpse of the everyday Vitoria that the postcards skip.
