MACA – Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante occupies a handsome eighteenth-century building in the old town, the Casa de la Asegurada, which is said to be the oldest civil building in Alicante. The museum was founded around a core collection donated by the sculptor Eusebio Sempere, and the permanent collection now covers Spanish avant-garde art from the mid-twentieth century onwards, with works by Miró, Calder, Chillida, and Sempere himself.

The building and the collection are well-matched: the cool, whitewashed rooms suit the geometric abstraction that dominates the permanent hang. Entry is free, which makes it an easy addition to a walk through the old city. Temporary exhibitions bring in contemporary work from across Spain and beyond.
