Castell d'Ontinyent

The ruins of the Moorish castle stand on the rocky hill above the old quarter, giving the best views over Ontinyent's river valley and the surrounding hills of the Vall d'Albaida. The approach is a 15-minute walk from the Plaza Mayor up through the lanes of the historic quarter. The castle itself is partially restored, with a viewpoint tower and interpretive panels on the site's history.

Access is free. The hilltop location makes it the natural starting point for a walk through the casco histórico, which contains the 16th-century Collegiate Church of Santa Maria and several modest baroque civic buildings. The entire old quarter circuit takes about an hour.

A story
The original Moorish fortification here dates from the 11th century and was part of the defensive network protecting the taifa of Dénia. After the Christian reconquest in 1244, the castle passed to the Crown of Aragon and was gradually modified. The current ruins preserve the tower and sections of wall from the Islamic period, making it one of the better-preserved examples in the Vall d'Albaida.
