Ermita dels Àngels

The Ermita dels Àngels stands on a low hill about a kilometre north of Sant Mateu, reached by a stone-paved track from the edge of town. The hermitage dates to the 17th century but sits on the site of much older sanctuaries; it is the focal point of the town's pilgrimage on the Monday after Easter, when most of Sant Mateu walks up the hill for a picnic.

The setting is the real reason to come: across olive groves and almond trees, with views to the Maestrat ranges to the west. The chapel itself is usually locked outside festival days, but the porch and the small terrace in front make a pleasant end to a morning walk from the town.
