The Palau Borrull is one of several Gothic and Renaissance palaces that survive in Sant Mateu's old centre — a reminder that this small town once housed the noble families who served the Order of Montesa. The façade has a fine pointed-arch doorway flanked by stone benches, and a row of trefoil windows on the upper floor that mark out the noble main room above.
The building is privately owned and not generally open for tours, but the exterior is on the main route between the Plaça Major and the church and worth pausing in front of. The neighbouring streets — Carrer Major and Carrer Historiador Beti in particular — have several more façades of similar quality.
