Halmstad Castle was built for Danish king Christian IV when Halland still belonged to Denmark. Its low, red Renaissance form is more restrained than fairy-tale, but the riverside setting makes it one of the city's natural landmarks.
The building is not a full castle museum in the usual sense, so treat it as part of a central walk rather than a long interior visit.
