Haparanda Railway Station

Frontier railway station from 1918, built when rail links and borders gave Haparanda weight.

Haparanda Railway Station was built in 1918, when this small border town carried more strategic weight than its size suggests. Trains, goods, mail, and travellers all had to reckon with the Swedish-Finnish border, different railway gauges, and the politics of northern Europe.

The station building is a quiet sight today, but it helps explain Haparanda's place on the map. It pairs well with a walk through the centre and across towards Tornio.
