Bålberget Memorial

On a wooded ridge northwest of Kramfors, a small clearing marks the place where one of the largest mass executions of the Swedish witch trials took place in 1675. A simple stone memorial and information board sit at the spot, reached by a marked forest path of about a kilometre from the road.

The walk through the spruce forest to the clearing is genuinely atmospheric — quiet, dim under the canopy, with little to remind you that you are anywhere near a town. The memorial itself is restrained, which feels appropriate for what happened here.

Eight women and one man were burned at Bålberget in 1675 — the climax of the so-called Great Noise, a wave of witch trials that swept Sweden in the 1670s and killed more than 200 people before the king finally stopped them. The name Bålberget translates roughly as 'pyre hill'.
