Nora Bergslags Veteran-Järnväg

The Nora Bergslags Veteran-Järnväg (NBVJ) operates steam and vintage diesel trains on what is claimed to be the oldest railway in Sweden still running its original route. The line runs between Nora and Ervalla, with connections from there to Örebro, passing through the forested Bergslagen landscape.

Trains operate on weekends from late spring through early autumn, with extra services during school holidays and special steam days throughout the season. The journey takes about 45 minutes each way. The Nora station building itself, dating from the 1850s, is one of the older surviving railway station structures in Sweden and worth a look before or after the ride. A small railway museum at the station covers the history of Bergslagen's industrial railways and the mining economy they served.

A story
The Nora–Ervalla line, opened in 1856, was built to transport iron ore from the mines of Bergslagen to the main railway network. It was never electrified, which is part of why it survived long enough to become a heritage line rather than being modernised out of existence. The first locomotive on the line, a British-built engine called "Förstlingen" (The Firstborn), is still preserved and occasionally runs on special occasions.
