Österbybruk is one of the best places near Östhammar to understand the Walloon iron story. Skilled ironworkers from Wallonia helped shape production here, and the wider network of Uppland forges produced the high-grade bar iron once shipped out through ports such as Öregrund.
The village is attractive as well as historical, with a manor setting and preserved industrial buildings. It is inland from the coast, but it explains why this quiet corner of Sweden mattered far beyond its size.
