Torekällberget

Open-air museum recreating a 19th-century Swedish town on a hill above the city

Torekällberget is Södertälje's open-air museum, spread across a wooded hillside above the city centre with original 19th-century buildings moved here from across the region. The collection includes farmhouses, barns, a windmill, a merchant's house, and various craft workshops — arranged to give a coherent picture of how people in this part of Sweden lived before industrialisation.

In summer the site comes alive with demonstrations of traditional crafts — blacksmithing, weaving, pottery — and there are farm animals for children. The views over Södertälje and the canal from the hilltop are good. In winter the museum is quieter but still open, and the buildings look striking under snow. Admission is free or very low-cost.

A story
The museum began in 1921 when local enthusiasts started moving threatened farm buildings from around Södertälje to the hill, a tradition that continued for decades. Today the site holds more than 50 original buildings — farmhouses, a merchant's house, craft workshops — arranged as they would have stood in a small Swedish town around 1880.
