Sigtuna Museum

The Sigtuna Museum covers the town's history from its founding as Sweden's first urban settlement around 980 AD through the Viking and medieval periods. The collection includes finds from excavations in and around the town — coins minted in Sigtuna (Sweden's first mint), tools, personal objects, and jewellery from the Viking age — and places them in the context of Sigtuna's role as an early Christian and trading centre.

The museum is small by national standards but well curated for the depth of its subject. The exhibits on the rune stones and the Christianisation of Sweden are particularly good. Located on Stora Gatan, it makes a natural complement to a walk around the town's medieval churches and rune stone sites.
