Gamla stan is why Eksjö is on the map. The old wooden town has narrow lanes, enclosed courtyards, and timber houses that make it one of Sweden's better preserved small urban centres.
Do not rush it. The pleasure is in the scale and detail: painted facades, worn gateways, small shopfronts, and streets that still read as a town rather than an outdoor museum.
