Alnön Old Church

A small but intact medieval church on Alnö island just north-east of Sundsvall, the Old Church (Aln gamla kyrka) dates from the 12th century. The interior holds an exceptional Romanesque sandstone font and a set of well-preserved medieval wall paintings — unusual survival in a region where most churches were rebuilt during the 19th century.

Open daily in summer; arrange a visit through the parish office at other times. Combine with a circuit drive of Alnön for views back to Sundsvall.

A story
The church's 12th-century baptismal font is a celebrated example of Romanesque stone carving and was made by the master craftsman known only as "Sighraf" — one of the few medieval Swedish sculptors whose name is recorded, thanks to a signature scratched on the rim.
