Norra Stadsberget

The northern of Sundsvall's two town-mountains, Norra Stadsberget rises 150 metres straight up behind the centre and is the easiest grand view from the city. A waymarked footpath climbs from Stenstan in about 25 minutes; a road also goes to the top for less ambitious visitors. The viewing tower, Gaffelbyn, has a small café open in summer.

The whole hill is a nature reserve with several kilometres of trails, plus an open-air museum (Friluftsmuseet) of relocated traditional wooden buildings — barn, smithy, cottage. Allow half a day in good weather.

A story
The viewing tower on top, Gaffelbyn, was built in 1907 as part of a wave of nationalist "look at our country" architecture across Sweden. From the platform you can see the entire fire-damaged grid of Stenstan and trace exactly how the firebreak boulevards saved the eastern half of the city in 1888.
