The Ljusnan river runs through the centre of Sveg, and fishing from its banks or by boat is the town's main outdoor activity. The river holds brown trout, grayling, and pike, and the stretch around Sveg is accessible without a long hike into the mountains. Fishing licences are available locally and are required for anyone over a certain age; the tourist information in town can point you to the current licence vendor.
The river also has historical significance — it was the Ljusnan's flow that was harnessed when the Sveg power plant was built in 1975, creating the adjacent Lake Svegssjön in the process. The lake adds to the fishing options and provides a pleasant waterside walk from the centre of town.
Boat hire is available in summer from the waterfront. The most productive fishing is typically in the early morning and late evening.
