Fribourg Funicular

The Fribourg funicular connects the lower town (Basse-Ville) to the upper town (Haute-Ville) on a slope too steep for comfortable walking. It is one of the oldest funiculars in Switzerland and was originally powered by wastewater from the upper city, a system so peculiar that it attracted tourists specifically to ride the hydraulic railway before its conversion to electricity.

The ride takes barely two minutes, but the views from the upper station back down into the river gorge are worth pausing for. The funicular is part of the regular public transport network and costs the same as a standard tram or bus fare. It is the sensible way to move between the two levels of the old town without tackling the steep stairways that otherwise connect them.

A story
Until 1966, the Fribourg funicular ran on a unique system: the water from the upper town's sewage tanks was used as ballast to pull the lower car uphill. The descending car, filled with wastewater, was heavy enough to haul the ascending car up on the counterbalance. It was only switched to electric power when the sewer system was modernised.
