Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore stretches 65 kilometres from Locarno in the north to Arona in the south, with the Swiss-Italian border running across it roughly a third of the way down. From Locarno the lake opens southward in a broad panorama, with the Brissago Islands visible just offshore to the southwest. The lake promenade (Lungolago) runs along the town's southern edge, lined with palms and plane trees.

Boat services from Locarno connect to Ascona, the Brissago Islands, and points further south on the Italian shore. A day trip by boat down the lake to Verbania or Stresa is one of the classic Ticino experiences. Swimming is possible from the lido on the eastern edge of town, and the water is warm enough from June through September. Windsurfing and sailing equipment can be hired from operators along the promenade.
