Allmendhubel Funicular

Historic funicular to flower meadows and Northface Trail viewpoints

The Allmendhubelbahn is a small funicular railway that runs from the village up to Allmendhubel at 1,907 metres, a meadow of Alpine flowers in summer with a terrace restaurant and a children's adventure playground. The funicular itself, built in 1912, is a short but steep ride that already rewards with views down into the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

From Allmendhubel, the Northface Trail leads along the cliff edge with some of the most dramatic walking in the Bernese Oberland — you are directly opposite the Eiger's notorious north face, close enough to understand why generations of climbers have stared up at it in calculation and terror. The trail requires no technical ability; good boots and a clear day are all you need. The loop back to Mürren takes about two hours.
