Schilthorn and Piz Gloria

Revolving summit restaurant with 360° Bernese Alps panorama

The Schilthorn stands at 2,970 metres and is reached by a four-stage cable car from Stechelberg in the valley below, with Mürren as the main intermediate stop. At the summit, Piz Gloria is a revolving restaurant that completes one full rotation per hour, giving you a changing panorama from the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau across to Mont Blanc and the Vosges on a clear day. The 360-degree view is one of the finest in the Alps, and the ride up — swinging over sheer rock and snowfields — is memorable in itself.

You do not need to eat at the restaurant to enjoy the summit. The outdoor terrace is open to all cable car passengers and the view from the top is unchanged whether you drink an overpriced coffee or not. The cable car ride takes about 20 minutes from Mürren; tickets can be bought in the village. Allow a half day for the round trip.

A story
The revolving restaurant at the top was used as the villain's lair in the 1969 James Bond film *On Her Majesty's Secret Service*. Blofeld's mountaintop allergy research clinic was filmed here, and the producers helped fund the final construction of the building in exchange for location access. The Bond connection has been enthusiastically maintained ever since — a permanent interactive exhibition covers the filming.
