Romanshorn

The largest port on the Swiss side of Lake Constance, Romanshorn is a quiet harbour town that doubles in size in summer when the lake ferries are running. The car ferry to Friedrichshafen on the German shore takes 40 minutes and runs roughly hourly through the day — making Romanshorn the obvious crossing point for road travellers heading north from Zürich into Bavaria.

The lakeside promenade is broad, treeless, and useful; the harbour itself is busy with fishing boats, sailing dinghies, and lake steamers. The town has a respectable art nouveau station and a few good lakeside cafés, but the appeal is mostly utilitarian — a working ferry port that hasn't lost its character.
