Old Quarter

Historic core of the old Khanate capital, with narrow stone-paved lanes

Address Bakhchysarai old town

The historic core of Bahchisaray, running roughly along Rechnaya Street from the Khan's Palace south-westward. Narrow stone-paved lanes wind between low Crimean Tatar houses, several surviving small mosques, and craft workshops. The character is unmistakably Tatar — closer to a Turkish town than to anything elsewhere in Ukraine — and almost nothing in the old quarter rises more than two stories.

The best way to see it is on foot, slowly, with no fixed route. Coffee shops along the main street sell coffee in the Turkish style and Crimean Tatar pastries. Look out for small craft galleries selling locally made felt, metalwork, and ceramics.
