St Mary's Abbey Ruins

The Augustinian priory founded in 1119 by Geoffrey de Clinton — the same lord who built Kenilworth Castle — once owned much of the surrounding land. After the Dissolution it was systematically dismantled, and what remains is a low ground-plan in the grass of Abbey Fields, plus a fragment of the gatehouse standing alone.

Information boards explain the layout; the ruins are at their most legible in winter when the grass dies back. The setting is unfussy in the best English way: a national historic site treated as part of a public park, with dogs and joggers passing through.
