Orford Ness Nature Reserve

Orford Ness is a strange and compelling shingle spit: part nature reserve, part Cold War landscape, part disappearing coast. The National Trust manages the reserve, where rare plants and birds share space with old military testing buildings and weather-beaten tracks.

It is not a casual beach day. Access is controlled, bikes and dogs are not allowed, and you should bring your own food and drink. That effort is exactly why it feels so different from the busier Suffolk coast towns nearby.
