Scallop is a four-metre steel sculpture by Maggi Hambling, set directly on the shingle beach north of town. It was made as a tribute to Benjamin Britten, who walked this shore often, and it frames the sea through two pierced shell forms.
Locals have argued about it since it arrived, which is part of the fun. Walk up from the fish huts and see it in changing light; it is much better as an object in wind and weather than as a postcard image.
