Chafford Gorges Nature Park

Chafford Gorges is a 200-acre nature reserve on the western edge of Grays, managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust. The park occupies former chalk quarries that have been colonised over decades by chalk grassland, scrub, and woodland, creating a landscape of unexpected drama in an otherwise suburban setting — the quarry walls give the site its gorge-like character, with paths running along ridges above steep drops into green valleys.

The site supports populations of slow worm, common lizard, and grass snake, along with more than 400 species of moth and a range of chalk grassland wildflowers including several orchid species. It is free to enter and has a network of well-maintained paths. This is genuinely good walking country for being so close to London — the isolation of the gorges makes it easy to forget you are in Essex's commuter belt.
