The Cloisters

The Cloisters is one of Letchworth's strangest buildings, an Arts and Crafts complex created for experimental education and cultural improvement. Its open arcades and romantic detailing feel far removed from ordinary commuter-belt Hertfordshire.

Access and use have changed over time, so treat it as an exterior architectural stop unless you have checked current arrangements. Even from outside, it captures the idealistic streak that made Letchworth more than a housing estate with trees.

A story
The Cloisters was built in 1905 as an open-air school for psychology and the Arts and Crafts movement, a wonderfully earnest piece of Edwardian idealism. Its mixture of education, mysticism, craft, and fresh-air reform could hardly belong anywhere but an early garden city.
