Rydal Mount

William Wordsworth's later home above Rydal, with gardens looking toward the fells.

Rydal Mount was William Wordsworth's family home for the last decades of his life. The house is modest by grand-house standards, but the gardens and views give the visit its force: terraces, trees, and glimpses of the surrounding fells.

It sits just outside Ambleside on the way to Grasmere, and works best as part of a walk through Rydal rather than a quick drive-by. Literary pilgrims will care most, but even sceptics usually concede that Wordsworth chose his view well.

A story
Wordsworth lived at Rydal Mount from 1813 until his death in 1850, long after the radical young poet had become a local institution. The house therefore belongs to the older Wordsworth: famous, settled, and surrounded by the landscape he had helped teach visitors how to see.
