The Ullswater Steamers operate passenger ferry services the length of Ullswater, connecting Glenridding at the southern end with Pooley Bridge at the north, with a stop at Howtown on the eastern shore. The boats make the journey a destination in itself — the lake is 12 kilometres long and set between fells that rise directly from the water on both sides.
The best use of the steamers is to take the boat from Glenridding to Howtown and walk back along the 11-kilometre lakeshore path — a route that Wainwright described as the most beautiful walk in Lakeland. The path is well-marked and varied, running through oak woodland, open fellside, and along the water's edge. Services run year-round, though more frequently in summer. Booking is advisable in July and August.
