Derwentcote Steel Furnace is a rare industrial survivor: an 18th-century cementation furnace tied to the iron and steel trades that shaped the Derwent Valley long before Consett's modern steelworks story. Its brick cone and working remains make the process easier to picture than a vanished factory site.
It is best for travellers who like industrial history, engineering or quiet rural ruins with a hard-working past. Combine it with the Derwent Walk or Hownsgill Viaduct and the valley starts to read as a landscape of transport, industry and woodland recovery.
