Terris Novalis

Tony Cragg's giant surveyor-instrument sculptures, visible from Consett's reclaimed steel landscape.

Terris Novalis is a pair of enormous stainless-steel surveyor's instruments by Tony Cragg, standing on the reclaimed land around Consett. The pieces are odd, memorable, and deliberately oversized, turning tools of measurement into landmarks.

They make most sense with Consett's steel history in mind. The sculpture marks a landscape that has been stripped, closed, remade, and folded into cycling and walking routes, so it is more than a roadside curiosity if you give it a few minutes.
