Chinatown

Stowell Street's compact, food-focused Chinatown beneath St James' Park

A two-block grid of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean restaurants and grocers behind the medieval town wall, with a ceremonial gate at each end of Stowell Street. The compactness is its strength — twenty restaurants within shouting distance of one another, almost all of them better than the equivalent street in much larger cities. The Hop Sing for cheap dim sum, Café 1901 for tea, and the Vietnamese pho places at the football-stadium end of the street have the loyal local followings.

The area gets going for lunch and stays open late on Friday and Saturday — convenient for the football crowd at nearby St James' Park, which sits across the road.
