Quayside

The riverside showpiece of Newcastle and Gateshead

The cobbled riverfront below the Tyne Bridge is the photograph everyone takes home. Restored Georgian warehouses, the Guildhall and old Custom House, the seven bridges of varying ages and the BALTIC art gallery and Sage on the south bank — all visible in a single sweep. The Sunday market under the bridges (food, books, art, vintage) is the best time to come; weekday evenings the cobbles fill with diners and drinkers.

Walk east from the centre by way of the Castle Stairs or Dog Leap Stairs — narrow lanes that drop the 30 metres from Grainger Town down to the river through fragments of the medieval town. Once on the cobbles, both banks are equally walkable: the Millennium Bridge tilts open every couple of hours for boats to pass.

A story
The Quayside was a working dock until the 1980s, when container shipping moved downstream and the warehouses fell empty. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge in 2001 and the BALTIC and Sage arts buildings on the south bank turned the riverside into one of the most coherent post-industrial regenerations in Britain.
