Pendle

Lancashire hill region of misty Pendle villages and the enduring memory of the witch trials

Many people have only heard of Pendle in one context -- witches. The trial of the Pendle witches in the 17th century has never been forgotten and is the subject of a much-read novel, Mist over Pendle by Robert Neill.

Pendle Hill is less than 2,000 feet high but still towers over its immediate area and is genuinely shrouded in mist for much of the time. Around it are the Pendle villages, some of them and the routes linking them being highly picturesque.
