The building is gone, replaced by an ordinary street in the town centre, but the site where the Casino Club stood on Station Road is a place of pilgrimage for fans of Northern Soul. From 1973 to 1981, the Casino hosted legendary all-night dance events that defined a musical movement — the dedication to obscure American soul records from the 1960s, played at high tempo to crowds of working-class young people from across the north of England.
A heritage plaque marks the approximate site. The Casino's influence on British music culture — and on the idea that you could build an entire subculture around obscure American records that major labels had ignored — remains significant. Northern Soul events and revivals are still held regularly across the north of England, often drawing former Casino regulars now in their sixties and seventies alongside new generations of enthusiasts.
