Warsash Maritime School

The Maritime School at the southern end of the village trains Merchant Navy officers and ships' engineers, and is the institution that gave Warsash its long-running connection with the sea. The campus is part of Solent University and is not formally open to visitors, but the lanes around it carry the daily life of the school — cadets in working dress, lifeboats hauled up in the yards, training vessels at the moorings on the Hamble.

The Sir Robert Atkinson Building (the white modernist block visible from the river) is the main simulator hall. Visible from the water but largely closed to the public.

A story
The school was founded in 1946 to retrain demobbed merchant seamen for the post-war shipping boom. Cadets still spend time in the Hamble's tidal water learning small-boat handling — and the larger ship-bridge simulators on the campus are some of the best in the country, used by serving Royal Navy and merchant marine officers to learn how to handle anything from a tug to a 400-metre container ship.
